OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

The main purpose of this newsletter is, of course, to remind you of our next talk which is by Ben Pope. After studying and working in horticulture for the last 22 years, Ben is currently enjoying leading a team to maintain and develop a large private garden in West Sussex. The talk is at 7.30pm on Wednesday October 28th at West Horsley Village Hall and in the context of ‘Winter Gardens’, is entitled :- ‘Creating movement whilst frozen still’. A seasonal talk looking at the winter garden and how to achieve movement and interest during the cold months. The talk begins by looking at what gives a garden structure, interest and movement during winter, whilst exploring how to develop it. It then moves on to identify plants that are of interest during the winter, detailing any specific cultural needs or aesthetic uses. It promises to be an interesting evening.
In addition, we will be holding our ‘Best Flower in the Garden’ competition. Just so we are all aligned, the prizes will be awarded for a single flower. Pot plants, sprays etc will be excluded, but if you are proud of them and would like them to be seen, feel free to bring them along! Your committee are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible coming to enjoy the evening.
As I said in the last newsletter, we all agree that we will have to adapt to the climate changes we are experiencing and, in this context, and at the suggestion from one of our members, your committee has decided that it would be useful for us, as a society, to share our experiences plant-wise of what has gone well and what has not.
Therefore, at the AGM on 25th November we will have a session where this can happen. After much discussion, your committee has agreed that rather than being overwhelmed with detail it would be simpler if members just gave us details of what thrived, what survived and what died! You can of course add comments as well, as to whether the plants received watering or not and were in the shade or full sunlight etc. Please send your experiences of flowers and shrubs to Barbara Firth at barbarafirth@aol.com and vegetables to Bob Spackman at bob.spackman@gmail.com.
